Mount Sinai is working to make a
contribution to the spiritual and relational advancement of our
Christian community. This ministry also seeks to encourage a
spirit of empowerment through biblical, spiritual and
motivational resources. We endeavor to teach the Christian
community and the community as a whole how to overcome personal
obstacles and to break the generational curse that looms over
our community and adopt a zeal for advancement.
Mt Sinai’s mission is one of service, however our vision is one of empowerment. Our ministry offers a unique perspective of how church and state can work together to the benefit of each other and those we are privileged to serve.
Currently, we offer free marriage and family
counseling, frequent food distribution to those in need, and our
doors are always open to the lost and hurting. We are presently in
the process of developing programs for unwed teens that have become
pregnant while still in school. Our goal is to provide childcare for
the children of these young women. Along with childcare, it is our
goal to introduce an innovative program we call “Ready To Learn”.
Recent
research in education has shown that children who come to school
ready to learn have successful school careers. Children who come
from homes where reading is not a priority often have difficulties
in the area of reading as well as content subjects, i.e. science,
social studies, health, etc. Educators have further noted the trend
of siblings of at-risk children also often come to school without
the skills necessary to achieve academically.
Our goal is to offer quality day care services, and
specific academic enhancing pre-school services to infants and
pre-school children of teenage mothers, as well as siblings of
identified at-risk school-age children, ages 0 - 3 years. Children
who participate in this program will come to public school ready to
learn. Mt. Sinai United Holy Church is committed to becoming a vital part of the Portsmouth community. |
